when intoxication nudges
your most guarded secrets
out of you
 
you feel unfaithful
to yourself

because you had not
admitted the secrets
even to yourself
(to your 'true', waking self,
that is)

and so you wonder
which one of you is the 'true' you
the one who guards the secrets
or the one who swims in it

and then you begin to understand

why some people
worship the drink
for it flings away 
inhibitions
like nothing else
and sets you free

and why some others
hate it
for it flings away your
inhibitions
without which you
do not recognize yourself
